Meet the Founder

I'm Michael Dowdell, and I started WGNX Radio Detroit for one simple reason — I love music and what it does to people. The right song can change your whole mood, take you back to a moment, remind you who you are. That feeling is the reason this station exists.

The other reason is what happened to radio. Corporate radio today has forgotten about the listener — same songs on repeat, no personality, nobody really talking to you. I came up on the west side of Detroit on Motown, hip-hop and R&B, back when radio wasn't so repetitive. You'd hear a deep cut and it felt like the DJ was letting you in on something. I wanted that feeling back.

So that's what we built. WGNX plays the best of Gen X and what came next — the anthems that defined an era, the deep cuts that never got enough airplay, and the new sounds pushing the culture forward. It started with late-night mixtapes and grew into a whole station.

But this was never only about the music. The vision for WGNX is to be a beacon and a voice for the Black community at large — a line for people to express how they feel about what's happening in the world today. Great music and real conversation, at the same time.

Every show, every mix, every shoutout comes from that same place. Detroit made me, and this station is how I give something back to it.
